WIR II: Workshops for integration and prevention of radicalization
Between 1 March 2019 and 31 December 2020, the IOM Country Office for Austria implemented a project aimed at supporting adolescents and young adults with Chechen roots with the development of their identity in a multicultural setting within the Austrian society.
The pilot initiative was implemented in close cooperation with the association Großes Schiff and other actors in the field of youth work. Phase II of the project benefitted from the positive outcomes of the pilot initiative and IOM’s already established presence among Chechen communities in Vienna and Linz. The project further contributed to increasing resilience among youth at-risk and to empowering communities in supporting their youth in building up their identity as Chechens in Austria. Moreover, based on recommendations from the community, the second phase of the project targeted specifically Chechen girls.
Different workshops addressed the history and current state of affairs in both the Chechen Republic of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Austria and increased beneficiaries’ media literacy and social skills in intercultural communication and conflict management. The overarching objective was to prevent radicalization.
